1: What is the basic theory behind Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine? What is Yin and Yang? What is Qi?
Acupuncture has been used for over 5,000 years treating a wide range of conditions.
There are two fundamental concepts in Chinese Medicine: Yin/Yang and Qi.
Yin and Yang is an ancient philosophy that describes the universe and the body in terms of two opposing forces. So Yin and Yang are always opposite of each other. For example, Yin is water while Yang is fire; Yin is night while Yang is day; Yin is slow while Yang is fast. The whole universe can be viewed as consisting of Yin and Yang on all levels and this holds true for our body. When these two opposing forces are out of balance the body suffers. For example, when we are too excited at night and our mind can not quiet down we would say that too much Yang energy and not enough Yin energy is present so insomnia will occur. Acupuncture can help to reduce the Yang energy and boost Yin energy and our body will feel balanced and our mind becomes calmer and sound sleep is restored.
Another important concept is Qi (pronounced as Chee), which loosely translates as energy, life force, or function. “Qi” flows along specific pathways called Meridians throughout the body. This constant flow of energy keeps the Yin and Yang forces balanced.
Qi in our bodies is said to pool and gather at specific locations which are acupuncture points. If the flow of energy (Qi) gets blocked, like water getting stuck behind a dam, the disruption can lead to pain and lack of function or illness. The acupuncture needles can be inserted into specific points to regulate the flow of Qi to induce a therapeutic effect and release blocked Qi in the body and better stimulate the function. This evokes the body’s natural healing response through various physiological systems.

4: Does the acupuncture needle hurt?
Acupuncture needles are hair-thin. Generally acupuncture does not hurt. Some people feel the needles as they go in and some people feel nothing. Acupuncture needles are solid needles, not hollow like hypodermic needles; they are much, much thinner.
Usually people report that acupuncture brings a very relaxed sensation to them because their body’s energy flow is rebalanced during treatment.
5: What should I do to prepare before my initial acupuncture visit?
- Before the initial visit you will be asked to fill out the initial patient forms online after your booking. Please be sure to complete this form before your first visit. This will allow us to speed up the intake time and spend more time on the treatment.
- Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothes.
- Do not come to treatment with an empty or a very full stomach. A fair amount of food in your stomach will help to keep you grounded during the acupuncture treatment.
6: What should I expect during initial acupuncture visit?
During the initial visit, Jean will take a detailed health history, perform a physical exam and go over all of your body systems with you in detail to evaluate if there is any imbalance in any system. Jean will also use diagnostic tools that are unique to Traditional Chinese Medicine such as tongue and pulse diagnosis.
Afterwards, Jean will inform you of her evaluations and give you the treatment plan. The second part of first visit will be the actual acupuncture treatment, which you will enjoy.
7: Does acupuncture work for infants, babies and children?
Yes, acupuncture works very well for infants, babies and children. Children are naturally more sensitive to energy flow and in most instances acupuncture works much faster for children than adults. If your child has an aversion to needles, the practitioner may use other modalities without needle involvement. For example, the practitioner will apply acupressure, massage, cupping, moxa or energy healing etc. over the acupuncture points.
8: Is Chinese herbal medicine safe? Does it have any side effects?
Yes, Chinese herbal medicine is very safe. All of our herbal medicines are GMP certified.
When Chinese herbal medicine is used skillfully, they are generally free of side effects. Chinese herbal medicine is a wonderful complement to acupuncture treatment. It offers a continual therapeutic input into the body between acupuncture treatments. By taking herbs on a daily basis, the positive momentum created by acupuncture is enhanced.
